Dad: Version 2010

I came across this ad in a local magazine the other day and it made me stop and read it carefully. Not because of the visually stimulating images, but because of the messaging.
The copy reads:

Dad's Guide to Cooking:
Breakfast: Pancakes
Lunch: Pancakes
Dinner: Pancakes

At least Dads have good financial Advice.

So this is how the media is still portraying the American Dad in 2010? As the helpless half of the parenting team when the Mom is not around? The parent who can't cook and resorts to frozen pizza when Mom is at a late meeting? I guess I'm just surprised to see an ad like this. I personally have a Dad in my life who is the opposite of all of the stereotypes, and I know other men that do just as much for their kids as the Mom does. I think they are becoming the norm, not remaining the joke of the parenting world.
Anyone else find the message in this ad outdated? Or are there still plenty of Dad's out there that fit this bill?

  1. I am about ready to take off my apron and slap that person who created that ad but I still have to do the laundry. Seriously whom ever created that ad is unimaginative and antiquated. Most dads I know provide as much care to their children as the mom.... Would someone please pass the syrup!

  2. It’s funny right? You see it and it makes you laugh temporarily. My laugh quickly faded away and my stare went blank as I tried to remember the last time that we had pancakes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner......how about never! Although I am sure my daughter would then consider me to be the coolest dad on the planet. I wonder if any dads actually complained to first bank or if it even matters to them that they portray dads to be weak and inept. To say this ad is offensive, dated and horribly stereotypical is an understatement. Let’s face it, times have changed and so have responsibilities of everyone, even our kids.

I have a question for Bank one.... Is the guy that approved this ad really Mr. Drysdale, the banker on the Beverly Hillbillies. You remember him, the overly ostentatious, blue blooded wannabe, that did anything he could to get his hands on the almighty dollar. But I'm sure that bankers aren't STILL like that, are they?

So here's to you Bank One, king of the dumb-ass ad for today. Thank you for offending men and women alike.

  3. Thanks for the comments ETB. I wondered if this ad would strike a nerve with Dads.

However I'm surprised you didn't throw bacon in there somehow; afterall, it's PANCAKES! ;)
